A Las Vegas teenager has written a children’s book to help young residents of S.A.F.E. House feel less scared and more understood during one of the hardest moments of their lives.
Talia H. Kasinski, 14, created The S.A.F.E. Den as part of her Girl Scout Silver Award. The book follows four young animals — Ruby the rabbit, Kip the squirrel, Amber the fox, and Fawn the deer — each navigating difficult and unsafe home environments. When they meet one night, they find comfort in realizing they aren’t alone, and together create a safe space where they can share their feelings and support one another.
“I wanted them to have a story that reminds them they’re safe, that it’s okay to feel whatever they’re feeling, and that they’re not alone,” Kasinski said.
“She recognized that children arriving at our shelter are scared and unsure of what to expect, and she wanted to give them something that would make them feel safe and understood,” said S.A.F.E. House CEO Beth Flory.
