Three Square Food Bank’s annual Holiday Match Challenge has returned for its 12th year and donations made to the nonprofit through the end of the year can be matched, having double the impact.
Backing the 2021 Holiday Match Challenge are local businesses and community leaders: Boyd Gaming Corporation, Nevada Gold Mines operated by Barrick, Intermountain Healthcare and Towbin Motorcars.
The 2021 Feeding America Map the Meal Gap study revealed that food insecurity in Southern Nevada remains above pre-pandemic levels. Nearly 364,000 residents, or one in six, don’t have reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.
“To see the number of food-insecure valley residents trend downward is promising, but our work is far from done,” said Three Square President and CEO Brian Burton. “Southern Nevada faced a hunger crisis before the pandemic. When the virus hit it had an explosive impact on food insecurity, driving it to levels never-before seen in our valley. We are on the road to recovery, but these numbers are higher still than what we saw pre-COVID-19…and any number higher than zero is too high.”
The holiday season isn’t always joyful for those who are food insecure. That’s why Three Square provides holiday meals to families in need, in addition to community meal programs for seniors across the valley. For more information on ways to get help, call 702-765-4030 or visit www.threesquare.org.
