Three Square Food Bank announced a new initiative developed by its internal Senior Hunger Programs department – Golden Groceries – providing supplemental groceries to food insecure seniors 60 years of age and older.
Golden Groceries offers a unique approach to food assistance for seniors. With the help of Three Square’s community partners, the program provides supplemental groceries to food insecure seniors. Throwing away the standardized, one-size-fits-all approach, Golden Groceries restores choice and dignity to seniors by enabling them to order from available inventory as well as the amount and type of food that meet their specific nutritional needs.
Pantry Support provides extra food with specified days and times for seniors at agency partner pantries to supplement needs, nutrition, etc.
Currently underway is planning for a Home Delivery component of Golden Groceries, which will deliver groceries directly to the doors of clients who qualify.
“Because Three Square’s Senior Hunger Programs focus solely on food insecurity among seniors, we are able to take the fight to an entirely new level,” said Jodi Tyson, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Three Square. “Seniors tend to fall into isolation and through the development of these programs, especially Golden Groceries, we want to reach those folks who may be struggling with the utmost support and show them that they are not alone.”
Three Square’s Senior Hunger Programs are developed to incorporate long-term strategies to fight hunger in the community. The Senior Hunger Programs, as well as community partnerships and initiatives throughout the year, will work to combat hunger among the 24,000 food insecure seniors in Southern Nevada.
In addition to Golden Groceries, a recent partnership with Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) reaches food insecure veterans 60 years of age and older through a weekly community dinner. The meal, held at the local VFW Post 10047, provides nutritious meals prepared on-site, as well as emergency food bags and other information and resources specific to seniors. In the first two months of the community dinner – which began late 2018 – more than 1,000 meals were served.
