Museum founding member and historian Robert Friedrichs will present the next installment of the “Atomic Stories” series, unpacking the people and circumstances behind some of the most compelling photographs of the Atomic Age — including the iconic Miss Atomic Bomb image.
The photo, taken by Las Vegas News Bureau photographer Don English on May 24, 1957, shows a Copa showgirl in a mushroom cloud swimsuit, arms raised triumphantly in the Nevada desert. For 25 years, her identity was a mystery. In spring 2025, Friedrichs finally uncovered the answer: Anna Lee Mahoney of the Bronx, New York.
