A new nonpartisan initiative is recruiting Nevadans to serve as trained election observers ahead of November’s general election.
The Nevada Election Observation Network (NEON) launched with a mission to provide independent, impartial observation of Nevada’s election administration — without promoting any candidate, party, or political agenda. The effort is supported by The Carter Center and guided by a cross-partisan advisory board with backgrounds in elections, journalism, Tribal communities, philanthropy, and civic engagement.
NEON plans to recruit and train up to 200 volunteers across all 17 Nevada counties and Tribal communities. Observers will use standardized checklists to document election procedures — focusing on how elections are conducted, not their outcomes. NEON is also conducting a pilot accessibility audit to evaluate equal access to voting for individuals with disabilities.
“What The Carter Center is doing by supporting NEON is to give Nevadans an opportunity to participate and observe firsthand our election process,” said advisory board member and Reno Gazette-Journal columnist Pat Hickey. “Democracy will only be strengthened by paying closer attention to how we conduct our elections.”
