The National Atomic Testing Museum’s “Atomic Stories” series continues Saturday, June 27 at noon with a look at Camp Desert Rock — one of the stranger chapters in Cold War military history.
The event features a screening of a declassified U.S. Army film documenting Operation Desert Rock, a series of exercises carried out in 1951 in which roughly 5,000 soldiers, civilian observers, and technicians were stationed roughly 27 miles from live atomic detonations. The goal was to study — and reduce — fear and uncertainty around atomic radiation.
After the screening, museum docent and former Nevada Test Site worker Marcus Brown will lead a discussion connecting the history to present-day conversations.
Included with regular museum admission. Tickets at atomicmuseum.vegas.
