In partnership with each other and every community in Nevada, Vegas PBS and The Nevada Independent are coming together in a new media initiative focused on civic engagement and inclusive community conversations. The partnership aspires to close a widening gap in Nevadans’ understanding of and engagement in local and state government.
“The project is based on the democratic principle that every Nevadan who is affected by an issue should have a say in the decision-making around it, regardless of socio-economic, cultural, ethnic or religious background,” said Mare Mazur, president of Vegas PBS.
“We continually seek diverse perspectives in our reporting because we believe this delivers a needed range of insights on human experiences that can challenge assumptions and help us develop new ways of seeing and storytelling,” said founder and CEO of The Nevada Independent Jon Ralston. “As residents of one of the most diverse states in the nation, Nevadans identify across multiple demographics and communities, and we believe these perspectives enrich our state — and need to make it into the public eye through media organizations committed to understanding and honestly reporting on the issues.”
As part of the Nevada Democracy Project, Vegas PBS and The Nevada Independent will team up for regular community listening sessions and from those conversations will seek to understand community needs and provide in-depth news coverage on the channels of both organizations. Residents of Nevada and members of the media are invited to the first community listening session:
Wednesday, November 1, 2023 — 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., West Las Vegas Library, 951 W Lake Mead Blvd, Las Vegas, NV, 89106
“We are setting out to expand the culture of civic engagement in Nevada through increased public discourse and increased coverage of issues that matter to underserved communities. With this first event, Vegas PBS and The Nevada Independent are poised to build upon their missions of amplifying diverse voices in our community,” said Vegas PBS President Mare Mazur.
