LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – The Honorable Shelley Berkley will be awarded the American Lung Association in Nevada’s highest recognition, The Legacy Award, at this year’s breathe FASHION event on June 2, 2018 at The M Resort, 12300 S. Las Vegas Blvd., Henderson, NV 89044.
Berkley is known throughout Nevada for her commitment to healthcare and quality medical education. For more than a decade, she has been a champion for the American Lung Association, including serving as the corporate walk chairperson for the annual LUNG FORCE Walk and as a leadership board member.
Berkley has also been a huge supporter of her friend and long-time executive assistant June Boyko, who spent ten years battling stage 4 lung cancer and is now in remission.
“Shelley’s dedication to our mission is personal,” said Kristina Crawford, executive director of the American Lung Association. “Her ability to jump in and help, as well as spread awareness of what we do saves lives.”
The American Lung Association is the leading organization working to improve lung health and prevent lung disease through research, education and advocacy. The nonprofit has made great strides to eliminate tobacco use and tobacco-related diseases with innovative new tactics like “Tobacco 21” state laws and the Freedom From Smoking® Plus program. The Lung Association committed $6.5 million to lung disease research in 2017, including $2.2 million dedicated to lung cancer research through the LUNG FORCE initiative.
“Shelley is a role model,” said Lisa King, an American Lung Association board member and chair of this year’s breathe FASHION fundraiser. “We are thrilled to honor her and her incredible contributions to the American Lung Association in Nevada.”
Berkley currently serves as chief executive officer and senior provost for Touro University’s Western Division, overseeing two of the fastest-growing medical schools in the United States. Prior to joining Touro in 2014, Berkley served the State of Nevada in the United States House of Representatives from 1998 to 2013. Berkley has also served in the Nevada State Legislature and the Nevada State Board of Regents.
This year’s breathe FASHION theme is “All that Glitters is Gold” and will showcase fashions by STITCHED and Ermelinda Manos as well as live entertainment and a high-energy silent and live auction. Total Show Technology donates much of the audio visual equipment used for this event.
The fundraiser will start at 5:30 p.m. in the Milan Ballroom.
