LAS VEGAS, NV – Help feed those in Southern Nevada who struggle with hunger without leaving your home.
On Saturday, May 13, 2017 letter carriers all over the nation, including here in Southern Nevada, will participate in the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, the largest single-day food drive in the country. It is also the easiest.
To participate, simply leave a bag of non-perishable food by or in your mailbox on Saturday, May 13. Your letter career will pick up the food with the mail, and deliver it to a local food pantry in need.
This is the 25th anniversary of the national food drive and the 27th year local carriers in Southern Nevada have collected food while on their routes.
Last year, Southern Nevada letter carriers collected about 180,000 pounds of food that was distributed to more than twenty local food pantries. Nationally, the food drive collected a record 80 million pounds of nonperishable food, raising the total amount of donations picked up over the past 25 years to more than 1.5 billion pounds.
Nearly 49 million Americans – one in six – are unsure where their next meal is coming from. This includes 13 million children as well as about 5 million seniors over the ages of 60, many who live on fixed incomes and are often too embarrassed to ask for help.
“We deliver mail to every address in Southern Nevada at least six days a week and see first-hand the need in our community,” said Glenn Norton, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 2502, representing Las Vegas.
