
More than 47,000 people died from overdoses in 2014, including 28,647 deaths related to opioids, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP). Opioid overdoses have quadrupled since 2000. In Nevada, 545 people died from drug overdose in 2014 according to the CDCP.
A national leader in judicial education, the National Judicial College is hosting the panel discussion in conjunction with its What Judges Need to Know: Drugs in America Today course, which will be held on Oct. 10-12. More than 40 judges – including nearly two dozen from Nevada – have enrolled for the three-day course.
Drugs in America Today Panel Discussion, sponsored by NJC, includes an overview of the opioid epidemic in the United States. The free discussion, open to the public, will be presented by drug addiction experts on Monday, October 10, 2016.
Discussion topics at the event include evidence-based treatment options for the courts and communities, efforts to limit the opioid epidemic, community-court relations and important lessons for addicts and their families. Panelists will include Bob Forrest (recovery advocate and activist); Dr. Melissa Piasecki (UNR School of Medicine); Sara Gordon, Esq. (William S. Boyd School of Law); Dr. Stephanie Woodard (Division of Public and Behavioral Health for the State of Nevada)
The panel discussion will take place from 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Monday, October 10, 2016, at the Green Valley Ranch Resort and Spa, 2300 Paseo Verde Parkway, Henderson, NV 89052.
