The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, announces its roster of public programs for October.

King of the Bootleggers: The Rise, Fall and Betrayal of George Remus
Date: Thursday, Oct. 7
Time: 7 to 8 p.m.

Description: George Remus was the biggest bootlegger of the Prohibition era but his reign was short-lived. Author Karen Abbott tells Remus’s roller-coaster story in her new book, “The Ghosts of Eden Park,” tracing his rise to the top of the bootlegging racket, his imprisonment, his wife’s betrayal and his fatal finale. A book signing will also follow the presentation.

Community Safety Forum: Fire Prevention Month
Date: Sunday, Oct. 10
Time: 2 to 3 p.m.

Cost: Free. Thanks to NV Energy, pre-registered guests are given free admission to the Museum following the event.
Description: In recognition of Fire Prevention Month, Tim Szymanski of Las Vegas Fire and Rescue will outline fire prevention measures, raise fire safety awareness and ensure attendees have plans in place to protect their families. Las Vegas Fire and Rescue provides all fire suppression, prevention and education programs in the city of Las Vegas as well as paramedic emergency medical services to residents and visitors. The department also has a bomb squad, hazardous materials team and technical rescue team.
Each month, The Mob Museum partners with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and other local agencies to host Community Safety Forums – free public programs focused on pertinent issues that affect Southern Nevada. Thanks to NV Energy, pre-registered guests are given free admission to the Museum following the event. The Mob Museum will also provide a recording of this presentation on its website.

Drug Brothers: The Rise and Fall of the Black Mafia Family
Date: Tuesday, Oct. 26

Description: The Black Mafia Family grew from humble beginnings in Detroit in the late 1980s to controlling nearly half the nation’s cocaine market. Following the debut of the new Starz series Black Mafia Family, journalist and author Scott Burnstein will detail the rise and fall of the Black Mafia Family, the largest urban drug-trafficking organization in American history, and the brothers who built the criminal empire.

- Scott M. Burnstein is an author, journalist, historian and organized-crime expert, based in the Midwest. He’s written extensively about various forms of mob activity in Detroit, Chicago, New England and Philadelphia, published six books on the subject of organized crime and produced three documentaries. His work appears weekly in The Oakland Pressand he’s written for The Detroit Free Press, The New York Daily Post, Ambassador Magazine, Chicago Magazine, The Huffington Post and CBS.com.
