If you are Black, Latino, Native American, Asian or Pacific Islander and need a bone marrow transplant, your chance of finding a bone marrow match is much lower than for members of the Caucasian population. That’s because minority groups have not participated in joining the bone marrow registry, meaning finding a match is much more difficult. Joining the registry is easy: a cheek swab and registration is all it takes!
The chances of finding a bone marrow match in the registry:
African American 29%
Asian or Pacific Islander 41%
Latino 48%
Native American 60%
Caucasian 79%
Many cancer patients – pediatric and adult – require a bone marrow transplant to survive their diagnosis. The bone marrow registry is often the only place to find a match. Additionally, sickle cell patients are finding benefit from bone marrow transplants and increasingly are seeking a donor match through the registry.
Bone marrow registry donors should be:
—Between 18 and 40 years old
—U.S. resident
—Meet general health guidelines
