Homeward Bound Cat Adoptions has received nearly 30 cats recently from the Best Friends Animal Society in West Los Angeles, as well as various shelters within Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control. The effort is aimed at relieving overcrowded conditions in Southern California shelters so they can focus on helping cats found in burn zones.
“We always prioritize our local community, collaborating with organizations like Boulder City, The Animal Foundation, and Henderson Animal Care and Control, among others, as we have the space to help. We take in cats from people who can no longer care for them and provide resources and guidance to help people keep their cats,” said Vanessa Porter, executive director of Homeward Bound Cat Adoptions. “We also rescue abandoned cats with no other options—cats that once likely had loving homes but were left on the streets. The need in Las Vegas is significant, but as we can, we will extend our help to surrounding areas, especially during critical times, like right now.”
Animal welfare agencies in L.A. are transferring out animals as quickly as possible so they can actively take in victims of the fire—whether pets who were found, or those who were evacuated and now no longer have a home to return to. The cats who are being transferred, including those to Homeward Bound, are not cats directly impacted by the fire. They were ready for adoption and did not belong to someone. Transferring them simply helps those groups make space.
Homeward Bound anticipates many more cats will be delivered from Southern California shelters to the Las Vegas area. Upon arrival, the cats will go through the standard admissions process but those who are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, will be available for adoption immediately!
