Annual Service Project Makes Transformative Change for Deserving Nonprofits
The Las Vegas chapter of the Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) announces its 2024/2025 UltimateGift recipient: Families for Effective Autism Treatment (F.E.A.T.) of Southern Nevada. YMSL memberswill be providing support for F.E.A.T.’s annual holiday party, including making ornaments, hosting a toy drive, constructing holiday décor, building cornhole sets that can be used year-round and decorating the party venue for the organization’s festive holiday celebration, which is expected to draw 800 attendees this year.
“We are delighted to be able to support F.E.A.T. with our Ultimate Gift this year,” said Susan Seip, president, YMSL Las Vegas chapter. “Our young men and moms love volunteering at F.E.A.T.’s parents’ night out events, and we look forward to spending more meaningful time serving its clients this holiday season.”
YMSL is a national service organization that brings together moms and their teenage sons who volunteer together to serve their local communities throughout his four years of high school. Each young man and his mom must complete 20 service hours throughout each year of membership; the Las Vegas YMSL chapter has 24 ongoing charitable partners, including Catholic Charities, Children’s Discovery Museum, F.E.A.T. of Southern Nevada, Just One Project, Miracle League, Ronald McDonald House and Spread the Word, just to name a few.
The Ultimate Gift is YMSL’s annual philanthropy event for local chapters whose goal is to enable an organization to complete a major project they could not achieve on their own. The idea for YMSL’s Ultimate Gift comes from the novel of the same name, written by Jim Stovall. In the book, a wealthy grandfather dies and leaves behind a grandson who anticipates a large inheritance. Instead, the grandfather has devised a crash course on life with 12 tasks—or “gifts”—designed to challenge him and send him on a journey of self-discovery. As a result, the boy grows a heart for serving others and is forever changed.
In addition to serving volunteer hours around the community, YMSL also hosts monthly meetings, which bring grade-level young men together to develop leadership skills and learn from expert speakers. Each young man serves a role within the organization, and together, they run the meetings and take turns presenting the group topics related to life skills and leadership. Their moms also attend monthly meetings, and every mom serves on a committee as well.
