With extreme heat hitting Southern Nevada, the JFSA Las Vegas Emergency Services division is working overtime to serve vulnerable populations, including seniors, the homeless, those with disabilities, and the working poor. To support its efforts, JFSA is now accepting donations for its Beat the Heat Summer Relief campaign. All donations go towards providing critical support services for thousands of disadvantaged Southern Nevadans during this summer’s extreme heat.
Through its Emergency Services Division, JFSA offers financial assistance to help vulnerable Southern Nevadans avoid evictions, utility shut-offs, or access to food and water. The division’s food pantry offers no-cost balanced nutrition for thousands of Southern Nevadans, and its Second Step program also brings access to critical food, water and shelter assistance during extreme heat to those transitioning out of homelessness.
There is tremendous demand for food and water from JFSA’s food pantry. During extreme heat, many who rely on JFSA cannot reach its pop-up food pantry locations around the valley. To help, the nonprofit must rely on its Nutrition-On-The-Go services to bring food and water to those in need. However, the program has limited capacity.
“It’s very difficult for vulnerable populations to tolerate the extreme temperatures,” said Renea Parr, JFSA’s Emergency Services director. “Our Nutrition-On-The-Go program can serve about 300 households a month, but the demand is well above that. All donations are appreciated and will go to sustaining our current levels of support and adding more resources.”
