On Tuesday, June 29, 2012, HELP of Southern Nevada in partnership with the Desert Research Institute (DRI), commemorated six graduates of its 2021 Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) STEM Force Program.
The commencement ceremony kicked off with opening remarks from President of DRI, Dr. Kumud Acharya and STEM Force graduate Luis Santa Maria Jimenez followed by an exciting reception filled with beverages and cake for graduates and their families.
Those in attendance includedDirector of Nevada STEM Networks, Manager of Southern Nevada STEM Regional Network and DRI, Craig Rosen and HELP of Southern Nevada President and CEO, Fuilala Riley.
Over the course of a month, HELP of Southern Nevada and DRI provided WIOA youth program members with a series of presentations, field trips and hands-on activities with a special focus on STEM fields in Nevada.
Students of the program were able to interact one-on-one with scientists, participate in hands-on experiments, tour science labs and dive deeper into the possibility of pursuing a STEM career.
“Our WIOA program is such an integral step in assisting at-risk youth with work-readiness skills and tools to ensure their success in the workforce,” said Riley. “We are so grateful to DRI for their support in making this STEM Force program happen for our clients who now are now equipped to pursue their passion in the STEM field.”
HELP of Southern Nevada is assisting the 2021 STEM Force graduates in developing an action plan needed to succeed in their future career endeavors.
