Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada (CCSN) and ECDC African Community Center recently honored 28 newly affirmed U.S. citizens.
At East Las Vegas Library, the agencies’ refugee clients were recognized for their path to citizenship, despite the challenges experienced through the 2020-2021 pandemic year.
Representatives from the offices of Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, Senator Jacky Rosen, Congresswoman Dina Titus, Congresswoman Susie Lee and Congressman Steven Horsford were in attendance to present certificates to the honorees.
According to the UN Refugee Agency, there are around 80 million people who have been forcibly displaced worldwide, nearly half of them being children. Among them, more than 26 million are refugees.
CCSN new arrivals assimilate into the Las Vegas community through cultural orientation. Refugees are also assisted with securing housing and basic needs such as food and clothing. Other services include English classes, employment services and training opportunities.
World Refugee Day takes place annually on June 20 and is part of World Refugee Awareness Month in June. The international observance is dedicated to raising awareness of the situation of refugees throughout the world.
