The Center for Financial Empowerment, the nonprofit founded by SCE Credit Union, is currently holding a July “children’s diversity book drive” to replenish books in seven Little Free Libraries in City of Las Vegas neighborhoods.
Rather than just an ordinary children’s book drive, this one has a unique twist in that the books being requested for donation will have a focus on celebrating diversity, different races, cultures, and traditions, according to Abby Ulm, director for the Center for Financial Empowerment.
The Little Free Libraries, which look like blue newspaper receptacles with lids that lift, were purchased and stationed in City of Las Vegas “reinvent” neighborhoods about 1 1/2 years ago. The premise is, “Take a Book, Leave a Book,” in which children and adults can borrow books, bring them home to read, and eventually return them for others to use. While the goal is to keep sharing books, many of them don’t get returned, which is why the Center for Financial Empowerment has stepped up to help replenish the libraries.
The book drive will be held through July, and
then the books will be taken to the Little Free Libraries so youth can enjoy ongoing
summer reading. For community members
who would like to donate new or gently used books, drop-off locations are at
the four SCE Credit Union branches: 1450 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway, C102,
in Henderson; 6475 W. Sahara Ave. in Las Vegas; 7155 S. Lindell Road in Las
Vegas at NV Energy; and 2215 E. Lone Mountain Road in North Las Vegas at NV
Energy’s entrance.
“We are grateful for any community members who
would like to contribute books to not only help children practice their reading
skills, but also to allow them to learn a little more about diversity and
caring for others,” Ulm said.
