An Army veteran who lost both legs during an attack in Baghdad, people living with lung disease, firefighters in full gear, professional stair climbing athletes and those with a personal connection to breathing difficulties will be among the 1,000 climbers to Scale The STRAT this Sunday, February 23, 2020, to support the American Lung Association in Nevada.
The first climbers will enter the stairwell around 7:15 a.m. for their 7:45 a.m. climb time, and the event is expected to conclude around 1 p.m. Climbers are scheduled in heats every 15 minutes.
7:00 a.m. -Scale The STRAT kickoff begins in festival area.
7:45 a.m. -USA Stair Climb Championship. Many these athletes can Scale The STRAT in 7 to 8 minutes.
9:45 a.m. -Firefighter Challenge. Approximately three dozen firefighters and first responders will climb the tower – many in full gear, which can add 70+ pounds. Firefighters have an increased risk for lung disease from exposure to gases, chemical and smoke in the line of duty.
11:30 a.m. – Travis Strong, an Army veteran who lost both his legs during an attack in Baghdad, will make his inaugural climb up The STRAT tower along with his team.
Travis wants to show people that life doesn’t end when something challenging happens, and that you can do anything you put your mind to doing. He also wants to raise awareness for mental health issues that soldiers often face when leaving the military.
Scale The STRAT is part of the American Lung Association’s Fight For Air Climb event, and is one of top 5 recognized climbs in the nation.
Online registration at scalethestrat.com is open until TODAY, Thursday, February 20, 2020, at 5 p.m. Climbers can also register in person on Sunday at The STRAT from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., pending space availability. In addition to the registration fee, there is a mandatory $175 fundraising component that must be met before climbers enter the stairwell.
